It was a huge night for SuckerPunch fighters Zach Davis, Levon Maynard, Anthony Morrison and Dwayne Shelton. All four fighters had impressive victories over tough opponents.
Zach Davis showed why he was selected in the IFL draft and an alternate on TUF7 when he quickly submitted his opponent via triangle choke 50 seconds into the first round. Zach looked very strong at 180 lbs. We are looking for more opponents in the welterweight class for him. It is rumored that TUF9 will be a welterweight show. This could be a great opportunity for Zach to showcase his talents!
Levon “The Maynman” Maynard has been fired up for this fight ever since his controversial loss at Battle Cage Xtreme. He knew this was a big fight for him, he could not afford three losses in a row. This was not only a big fight for Levon but also a risky one. His opponent, Doyle is a very big and very game opponent who has fought as a light heavy weight in EliteXC’s promotion. Levon looked very technical and athletic when he submitted the bigger Doyle at 1:04 of the first round. If TUF9 turns out to be a welterweight season, you will definitely see Levon at the tryouts.
.
Anthony “Antmo” Morrison fought veteran Jay R. Palmer. Palmer, who came in overweight, has been in the fight game for a long time and fought Levon Maynard back at CSC 23 as a welterweight. Anthony defeated Palmer via armbar in the second round and dominated the entire fight. Morrison, who is one of our brightest 145 lb prospects, moved out of Philly to train full time with Team Combat in Richmond, VA. All we can say about a Anthony is that this kid is a sponge and is learning and executing at a rate that is impressing all of his coaches.
Dwayne “Deisel” Shleton capped off the evening as the main event against the Brazilian, Sedico Honorio of Daddis MMA. Sedico trains with EliteXC contender Wilson Reys and had plans to stop Shelton’s wins streak. Dwayne controlled every round and won by unanimous decision which puts him on a 3 fight win streak. Dwayne fought at a catch weight of 140lbs and plans to continue his drop to 135lbs. We are all excited to see what happens when he gets there… Dwayne is freakishly strong even as at 155.
Good night all around guys, welterweights up next, guess I gotta say goodbye to all those baconators
Well I was excited about this fight for a couple of reasons. Palmer is a veteran and there has been a bit of bad blood between him and my team so i felt i needed to represent and use him as a ruler to gauge myself against someone with a lot of experience.
When I heard Palmer didn’t make weight (13lbs over) it fired me up because I felt it was unprofessional of him and showed disrespect to me. I wasn’t nervous that he was so much heavier than me because for the first time in my life my training has been so good that i felt i could do anything. I also knew that Palmer has a family he needs to take care of so i didnt want to take food off his table because of his own lack of professionalism.
I felt very good out there and did everything i wanted to, checked a few kicks, dominated the clinch and just toyed with him for the first round. I even had him down in his corner and dragged him over to mine to show my ring awareness and to let my coaches know I was hearing them loud and clear. Palmer and I were talking a little trash to each other during the first round and I may have gotten sucked into that a bit, so going into the second round Kru Crenshaw told me to stop talking and finish him… so i did that, with an armbar as a tribute to my SuckerPunch teamate Levon!! haha who finished Palmer the same way a few fights back! When it was over I stood above Palmer and asked him, “Do you have respect for us now?” and he said yes so I helped him up and shook his hand.
I feel my game is evolving very fast due to the training I am now getting at Combat Sports Center. I have been fighting since 2003 and If I had to fight myself one year ago with what I know now, I would beat myself by TKO in the second round… That’s how good my training is now. I know submissions now and my confidence is up, my game has evolved so if I ever get a shot at the WEC I will not let you guys down. For now I have my eyes set on getting a shot at the NADC featherweight title held by Corey Mahom. Of course I feel I am ready for the WEC now but I understand that I have to work to get there.
I want to say thank you to my mom, my brother and my daughter. I miss you so much but daddy is out here trying to better himself for you and everyone he represents.
I want to thank my team, Team Combat and the Combat Sports Center for training me like i have never been trained before! To my sponsors, Critical Fight Gear and Jesus Didn’t Tap thank you guys so much for the support it means a lot to me. Great job Critical Fighters! Great show, glad it didn’t rain:)
This was one of the best cards i have seen at a local show EVER! Congrats on the wins guys! I look forward to seeing you in more shows around the area and I know I will see you in the big shows soon!
Anthony I wish you the best man I have watched you in other shows and you looked totally different on saturday! You training is showing, stay with it man!
Diesel you always have exciting fights when is someone going to pay attention!!!
Levon you look like the complete package and I was glad to see you take down your opponent! He was huge!
Zach, this was the first time I had seen you but I was really impressed! you tied him up quick!
When are you guys fighting again?? Please let me know and I will definitely be there!
Antmo did his thing at the fights (Everyone did for that matter). He really put it on ol’ Jay R and I was glad he was able to catch him in that armbar. I can attest to the fact that Jay R Palmer was and has been disrespectful at both of the shows I have seen him at. Anthony was telling me before the fight that he really wanted to use some of the submissions he has been working instead of KOing him like he has done to others in the past. It was funny after the fight Anthony said that when he had the mount on Palmer he was thinking to himself…”What would LeVon do?” lol It cracked me up when he said that.
I missed Zach’s fight because the officials made us stay in the back during the fights so I only got a chance to hear the results afterwards. But Zach did his thing and submitted his opponent with a quickness. I am jealous because he got one of the quickest submissions of the night ;p
Don’t let me get started with Diesel’s crazy fight…man everyone was hyped up during that one. There was everything in that fight and it was pretty fast pace throughout. I definitely think the craziest part of the fight was when Diesel put his arms up in a victorious pose when there was about 10 secs left in the fight and started walking away from his opponent. His opponent thought it would be a good chance to land a final strike but ended up running into Diesel’s right hand. Just crazy…
I was very excited about getting a win on Saturday. I was concern that size advantage of my opponent would make it very difficult for me. He dropped from fighting at the 205 lbs division to face me at 170 lbs so I really didn’t know what to expect. Prior to this fight I had been doing a lot of strength training to ensure that I wouldn’t get overpowered. It appears that it paid off because I felt very strong during the match and was successfully able to not take any damage. I have to say that my opponent was a class act. He never talked trash nor did he give me a dirty look at any point during the weekend. I wish John all the best. One thing I am upset about is the fact that I hurt his arm during the match unintentionally. When I had the armbar I actually saw him tap out but the ref didn’t see it so I held the armbar until the ref stopped it. It appeared after the fight that John’s elbow was hyperextended and will take some time to heal properly. I hope that I didn’t cause any serious injury to his arm. I had a blast this weekend though. I definitely want to thank everyone that supported me at the event. All my guys from Global Martial Arts Academy in VA Beach that came out to watch me fight, my corners/coaches Mateo De Los Reyes and Rich Ostrum, my girlfriend/web designer, my good friend Daryl Craddoplh, my co-workers from Langley AirForce Base, all the guys from Team Combat and Evolved Academy, Sam Caplan, and my sponsors FiveOuncesOfPain.com, Jesus Didn’t Tap, and Critical Fight Gear. Until next time…
