When we met Barry we had already been told by his coach Duke Roufus that Barry was the real deal. Coming out of the ranks of K-1, Duke had mentioned that Barry was a freak of an athlete with kicks that could crumble any man. The buzz about Barry is that he could be the best pure striker in the heavyweight division.
During a photo shoot we asked Barry to give us some action shots and we were blown away when this 240lb mass of muscle did one of the most graceful backflips we had ever seen. What was really amazing was he landed without making a noise, and he landed in the same spot he took off from. We realize this doesn’t say much for his fight game, but it does show that this is a very athletic heavyweight contender and we are confident he will make waves in that division.
Barry is scheduled to make his debut in the UFC on December 27th against Dan Evensen.
We sat down with Pat and asked him to answer a few questions and here is what he had to say:
1. WHEN DID YOU START TRAINING IN MARTIAL ARTS?

I would like to suggest that all of Pat’s opponents stand and trade with him. His stand up game is lacking in speed and power and should be easy pickins for UFC heavyweights.

As a KF Brother of Pat’s I can attest most to his being a Goofy Bas- uh, I mean being a hard hitting guy who is a pleasure to be around 😉 He is by far one of the best Sanda Fighters I’ve ever seen and has a personality that speaks of good home training. We love to hang out with him when we get a chance and we hate to hold pads for him.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching Pat grow since his storm through the competition when K-1 came to Vegas looking for fighters.
He showcased his skills in Hawaii by nearly knocking Big Daddy Goodridge’s head off with a kick that caused a gash so big they didn’t have enough stitches in the arena to close it.
Now he will be a devastating crowd-pleaser with fans worldwide with the UFC! Thank you, Dana White for bringing him to the big show!

I have been on the receiving end of Pat’s skills when they were just “baby” skills and he has always been inspirational in a painful way. Just got back from training with Pat. Everyone knows that he is the man on the feet, but he has been putting in the time on the mat as well. I met Pat in Mississippi in the spring, and that is when he decided to make the move over to MMA. Since then he has been training BJJ atleast 5 times a week (sometimes more), both gi and no gi. Obviously he is relatively new to jiu jitsu, but he is a natural and has been steadily getting better. We have been switching him over to fight mode (positions, submission defense, getting back to the feet, etc.), but I am sure after the fight he will be right back in the gym training regular BJJ again. He has also been working on his wrestling, and his takedown defense is great (and that is with him not striking at you full power). Pat is a one of the nicest guys around, and he is pure entertainment in the ring. I have a good feeling that it will make the PPV after the main event.
You know how people have been complaining about the lack of a stand out heavyweight in the UFC? Well, the wait is over. Quadzilla AKA Pat Barry is going to rise to the top faster than he knocks guys out.
The only thing that will outnumber all the haters that will be popping up will be his fans. I’ll end this post by quoting one of the foremost poets of my generation….

I met Mister Barry while I was visiting in Milwaukee from Toronto, Canada. I had the PLEASURE of meeting him while training with him at CrossFit Milwaukee and I knew right then and there that he was going to be successful. A serious bad ASS. I personally like the little guys best because they move faster, but the UFC Heavy weight needs someone to liberate us from Brock Lesnar. Patrick Barry, I shall expect you thus to get to the title as quick as possible and reign for a long time…if you please… 😛

As one of Pat’s early mentors/training partner in New Orleans, I knew that he was for real and we had to somehow get him on the world scene. It took alot of work, patience, and belief, and sacrifice from several angles, but HE did it despite obstacles and setbacks…
I am continually proud of him, and know that the UFC doesn’t realize just what’s coming…

You certainly don’t see many kickers like that in any weight division! I would like to say that Pat is an awesome athlete and fighter, but even more noteworthy (in the big picture) is that he is truly an awesome human being who is considerate/concerned about others, and his attitude is one of confidence and not cocky. I think that plug should spare me a kick in the teeth! ;-P

OMG! I’m beaming with pride! I used to love watching you win gymnastics competitions. Then your KNOCKOUTS make your kickboxing matches so exciting! Now you’re headed to do major DAMAGE in the UFC! I saw everything you put into your training when i just visited you and WOW, Pat! You’re amazing. So many of your teamates came up to me an told me that you were MONSTER and a KILLER! They asked me if you used to beat me up when we were kids lol and I told them you are the most caring, gentle and sweet person i know other than Ja, of course. And you always had muscles and big strong legs and now it’s all coming into fruition. Remember that there’s a reason you have friends all over the world. I remember the 1st time I saw Pat “strike-kick”. It was in New Orleans 1983. he was young just developing his skills, speed & power. It was awesome & humorous to see him devestate his opponent. Today he is “The Man”, to watch & watchout for. He will give you a thrill & a laugh. UFC are U ready?

ALAN— i started kickboxing when i was 23. october made 6 years since i’ve put my first pair of gloves on and thrown my first punch. NEVER EVEN BEEN IN A STREET FIGHT, CAUSE I RUN TO FAST FOR THAT! mainly competed in san shou, chinese kickboxing, around the states and china. then moving into k1. i was 26-3 before i turned pro, then ended up with a 22-5-1 record. and i’m also newly 3 and 0 in mma! i competed in two of the wcl shows. i had 4 fights and won 3 of them. feel free to ask away man! peace!

TAPPIN187— i’ve been training my ground game for a solid 5 months now. i’ve gotten more comfortable there, but it’s still not my home. training with Red and the rest of my teammates has helped me to grow stronger. if taken to the ground, fingers crossed that doesn’t happen, i’ve been learning how to explode back to my feet where the ball is back in my court. anti take downs has been one of the main focusses.

we about to do it hard. just like every tuesday and thursday hard! bringing home heads to hang on the gym wall! DUKE ROUFUS ACADEMY TAKEN OVA THE WORLD! you all have been there with me from day one, and your gonna be there with me on the 27th. we’re all getting in the octagon that night. that’s why victory is certain, cause Mr. Evensen isn’t just fighting me. hes going to war with every time Rob Smith scarfed me unconcious, every time Kaz put his elbo in my eye, every time Red submitted me knowing i was gonna have to do 10 burpees! for every time i almost had a good move on Gary and he bent my fingers so i would let him go, thats gotta be illega, hah! every time ZEUS yelled at everybody in the gym for sucking then slipped in a New Orleans or Amsterdam comment and we all knew he was talking to me, hah! he’s going to war with all the times i landed a body shot or low kick on everyone in the gym, except Paul and Chico, oooh its coming fellas! that one time LUNCHBOX slamed me on my back after walking me around the gym. he’s going to war with all those burritos i couldnt eat cause i didn’t deffend the move that pulls your bottom row of teeth off! he’s fighting a guy who got his eye kicked out by ANTHONY. and i bet he hasn’t had PAUL or ISAC lay on him for 20 minutes. for all the times DAVE tried to explain to me how to get from under him by using 10th dan jedi terminology, “you gotta double single shrimp this leg and umpa scarf my arm while i wizzer your face”. MAN WHAT????? i’m bringing home a win for all the times Duke told us we only had one more to do and what he really meant was 6 more, and some burpees. for all the times i got kicked in the nuts while holding pads for high kicks, thanks REY! for all the times i got choked to death by CHRIS’s foot. For all the times DAN watched me run slow then gave me the dissapointed face! for all the times STAN spit in my face and yelled SQUALL at me! for all the times i forgot to bring my card! for all the times mom got off the phone with me without saying by and i sat there like a jack! and mostly i’m BRINGING THE THUNDER for all the people out there who think my last name is BERRY! it’s BARRY. Well, nephew, now that you are bigtime, I guess there won’t be anymore roadtrips through the southwest. We enjoyed those stops in NM because you always brought the most interesting groups of guys with you and Drew. If you ever feel the need for some high altitude training, we will always be here to back you….and I promise no more headslaps. I’ve known Pat for more than a few years now… Fortunate to have met Pat in N.O. a few months before Katrina changed everything, everything except Pat-he never wavered or lost focus. He just trained harder, knowing that the only thing he could change and make better was himself… Privileged in “05 to travel with Pat & Duke to Tokyo for Pat’s K-1 fight in “The Dome” and grateful to be there on Dec 27th when he make’s his UFC debut at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (sound’s great Pat, doesn’t it?)!… Lucky to see Pat almost everyday now since he moved to Milwaukee. Real deal friend, teammate and fighter… No one deserves this opportunity more than Pat BArry, no one will do more with this opportunity than Pat BArry.

Sitting in front of my tv refusing to move until Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers were off, then going outside to practice and play what you had seen has paid off in a BIG WAY for you. I find myself looking at UFC on Spike tv for hours. When the teams like Mir and Noregita (not sure of the spelling), compete it get to be like a soap. You watch them in the house and then follow them to the gym for the fight it is so addictives. I’m HOOK. I guess you could say I’m HYPE.:) We will all be glued to ppv on 12/27, to see the WIN.
